It’s a little-known fact that if you’re going on holiday, getting married or having a party, you may be able to salary package the costs if you are entitled to this benefit. When packaging holiday accommodation, it must be used primarily for yourself and your immediate family. Others can share your accommodation as guests, as long as the accommodation is primarily for you.

Types of accommodation which can be packaged include:

  • a holiday home
  • a hotel or motel room
  • a room or cabin at a holiday resort
  • a room or suite at a bed-and-breakfast
  • an on-site caravan or cabin
  • a serviced or self-contained apartment
  • a houseboat
  • camping ground site fees
  • hire of caravans and mobile homes
  • annual fees for time share arrangements
  • cabins on cruise ships

When it comes to venue hire, the costs must be for the actual venue itself, unless other items are included in a ‘hire package’. For example, if the venue provides tables and chairs as part of the package then you may salary package the total amount. However, if you hire a venue and then separately hire tables and chairs, only the venue itself can be salary packaged.

Venues and function rooms covered by this benefit include:

  • reception centres
  • function rooms
  • marquees
  • an entire boat or plane for the purposes of a social event
  • an entire corporate box

What you need to do, and what you should know:

  • Confirm your entitlement to this benefit by contacting us.
  • The combined total of this benefit and our Meal Entertainment Card is $2,650 per FBT year. You may pay for accommodation and venue hire with your Meal Entertainment Card if you have one.
  • If you do not have a Meal Entertainment Card, then simply pay for the expenses upfront and obtain an itemised tax invoice.
  • Send us a claim form and a copy of the tax invoice.
  • We will arrange for your employer to deduct the amount from your pre-tax salary.
  • Depending on the amount, we may be able to spread the deductions from your pay over several periods to help you out.
